City Dock Project

In response to deteriorating infrastructure and limitations on large vessel growth, the Bayfield Harbor Commission is planning a renovation to the City Dock. This project, slated to take place in the off season between Fall 2026 and Spring 2027, will see:


  •  the removal of the "L"
  • construction of two 75' and one 60' cement floating docks for commercial use
  • construction of five 40' floating docks for transient use
  • construction of one 40' floating dock for mixed used
  • upgraded electrical 


The project is currently estimated to cost around $2 million dollars with $887,250 in grant funding already secured. Additional grant funding is sought, and any remainder will be financed with a loan paid by harbor revenue. See additional grant information in the FAQs.


The Bayfield Harbor Commission has been working with AMI Consulting Engineers on the project design. It is currently at the 60% with plans to go to bid this winter. Current design document are available below.

  • Deteriorating condition of finger piers.

  • If nothing done, finger piers would be condemned and unusable. Electrical not to code.  
  • If just slips removed, space would be lost and unable to facilitate existing boating demand. Electrical not to code. 


  • The estimated budget is presently in the $2 million range. This may vary based on material costs when actual bids come in. 


  •  Boating Infrastructure Grant (BIG): $587,250 with stipulations for creating 10 new transient slips.
  • Army Corps of Engineer Funds: $300,000 remaining from past harbor projects.
  • Seeking additional grants including Wisconsin Grants for Local Projects, Recreational Boating Facilities (RBF) and Harbor Assistance Program (HAP). 
  • The balance of the project will be financed with a debt service to be paid using Harbor revenue.


  •  January 2026: Public Meeting
  • January- February 2026: Project goes to bid
  • October 2026: Project construction begins
  • May 2027: Project complete prior to start of the boating season


  •  No change in 2026.
  • Recreational boaters offered available slips in Bayfield Marina.
  • Commercial businesses prioritized on City Dock. Existing customers contact Bayfield Marina staff to discuss specifics. .


  •  AMI Consulting Engineering out of Superior.
  • Project not yet out to bid.
